The Orchard Dragonfly

Wednesday, October 22, 6pm – 8pm

This is the Orchard Club’s version of a combination of the popular radio series called The Moth (https://themoth.org) and The Human Library Book (https://humanlibrary.org/).

About The Moth Radio Hour:
“The Moth Radio Hour is called “The Moth” because its founder, George Dawes Green, wanted to recreate the atmosphere of sultry summer evenings on his native Georgia porch, where he and friends would tell stories while moths flew in through a hole in the screen and gathered around the light. He named the storytelling group “The Moths” and carried the name to New York, hoping people would be drawn to their stories as moths are to a flame. The “Radio Hour” part of the name refers to the show’s format, where stories are told live, without scripts or notes, in front of an audience.”

About The Human Library:
“The Human Library® is, in the true sense of the word, a library of people. We host events where readers can borrow human beings serving as open books and have conversations they would not normally have access to. Every human book from our bookshelf, represent a group in our society that is often subjected to prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin etc.”

Those who wish to share will put their names in a basket. We will choose 3 story tellers and follow the rules of The Moth for the story telling. We will add the Human Library aspect by opening up the floor for audience members to ask questions of the story teller.

The rules as explained by AI:
Storytelling Rules for Live StorySLAMs

  • True & First-Person: Stories must be based on your own life experiences, told from your own perspective.
  • No Reading: Stories should be told by heart and not read from notes or a paper.
  • Theme-Based: Each StorySLAM has a theme, and your story must relate to it.
  • Five-Minute Limit: You’ll have five minutes to tell your story, so you need to be concise.
  • Conflict & Change: A compelling story usually involves stakes (something to gain or lose) and some form of personal transformation or change over the course of the narrative.
  • Start Strong: Grab the audience’s attention with an engaging opening.

Rules of Conduct

Anti-Harassment & Discrimination: We abide by The Moth’s Code of Ethics that prohibits harassment and discrimination at its events and office.
