My Story:
I don’t believe my mom “battled” Alzheimer’s. That word carries the assumption that one can win a battle — and there was no winning this one. So I say she suffered from Alzheimer’s for more than 20 years.
Mom started showing symptoms that I noticed at age 48. She was officially diagnosed at 53 and lived until she was 69.
People would say things like, “Thank G-d she’s healthy.” But what G-d were they thanking? The last five years were torture. It wasn’t about her not knowing who we were. It was about her no longer knowing how to walk, eat, bathe, toilet, speak, or exist independently.
Thankfully, my dad could afford at-home care, and I could afford the time to help manage it. Not everyone has that privilege.
I want “battle” to be the word we use moving forward — but the battle is finding the cure.
The Fundraiser
I am happy to participate in a version of The Longest Day, the Alzheimer’s Association’s Do-It-Yourself fundraising event, with a fresh name — Do What You Love to End ALZ — and new resources that empower our participants to thrive. The new name captures what makes the event so powerful — its flexibility, personalization and the emotional connection that draws people to their passion. It’s simple, clear and easy to share — all while staying true to the spirit of the original event.
There are now treatments that can slow disease progression for people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. While this is a tremendous step forward, our work is far from done. We will not rest until everyone living with Alzheimer’s — at any stage — can get the treatment, care and support they need and deserve.
The Event
Please join me in raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association, an organization that was paramount in helping us hold onto our sanity throughout the journey with my mom.
Come craft with me. I will be knitting all day. You can craft, visit, bring a dish, whatever you like. Please share the fundraising page with all of your friends. They can sponsor you or simply just donate. Let’s do what we can to BATTLE THIS DISEASE!
